Introduction

Set on a peaceful hillock at Keesara in Medchal-Malkajgiri district, Telangana, the Keesaragutta Sri Rama Lingeshwara Swamy Temple is one of the most loved Shiva kshetras near Hyderabad. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Sri Ramalingeswara Swamy, along with Goddess Parvati, and is traditionally associated with Lord Rama. Located about 30 km from central Hyderabad and around 12 km from ECIL, Keesaragutta combines easy access with the atmosphere of an ancient hill shrine.

The name Keesaragutta is linked with the older name Kesarigiri, recalling Hanuman, the son of Kesari. Devotees visit for Shiva darshan, pradakshina around the hill shrine, and worship of the many Shiva lingas found across the temple surroundings.

Sthala Purana and Sacred Legend

According to the sthala purana, Lord Rama came to this region after the victory over Ravana and wished to worship Lord Shiva. He asked Hanuman to bring a Shiva linga from Kashi. As the auspicious time for installation approached and Hanuman had not yet returned, Lord Shiva is believed to have manifested a linga for Rama to install. Because Rama performed the consecration, the deity came to be worshipped as Sri Ramalingeswara Swamy.

When Hanuman arrived with lingas from Kashi, he was disappointed that the installation had already taken place. Tradition says he placed or scattered the lingas around the hill, and many Shiva lingas are still worshipped in the temple complex and nearby rocky areas. Rama is also believed to have honoured Hanuman by associating the hill with Kesari, giving rise to the name Kesarigiri, which later became Keesaragutta.

Historical and Archaeological Importance

Keesaragutta is not only a living pilgrimage centre but also an important archaeological landscape. Excavations and explorations around the hill have revealed ancient brick structures, fortification remains, yagasala-like spaces, prayer halls, rock-cut cisterns, and numerous Shiva lingas. The finds point to the sacred and cultural importance of the hill through early historic and medieval periods.

The area is also associated with the Vishnukundina period. Discoveries of Jain Tirthankara images near the temple steps indicate that Jain traditions existed in the region alongside Hindu worship. A rock-cut cave in the vicinity bears an early Telugu inscription, often cited as one of the earliest known Telugu inscriptions from the Telangana region.

The temple stands on a hill, reached by steps and road access. The main sanctum houses Sri Ramalingeswara Swamy, worshipped as a Shiva linga, with shrines and sacred spaces for associated deities around the complex.
