Jaffna, Northern, Sri Lanka
Description:
Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is one of the most revered Murugan temples in Sri Lanka, located in Nallur near Jaffna in the Northern Province. Dedicated to Lord Murugan, also known as Kandaswamy, the temple is a major spiritual and cultural centre for Sri Lankan Tamils and Murugan devotees around the world.
The temple is known for its majestic gopurams, disciplined worship, vibrant annual festival, and deep connection with the historic kingdom of Jaffna. For devotees, Nallur is not merely a temple but a living symbol of Tamil Saiva faith, identity, and continuity.
The presiding form at Nallur is Lord Murugan, worshipped through the sacred Vel, the divine spear that represents wisdom, victory, and the destruction of ignorance. The temple also honours Murugan in forms such as Shanmugar, Muthukumaraswamy, Valli Kanthar with Valli and Deivayanai, and Dandayudhapani.
Worship at Nallur follows a highly disciplined Saiva tradition. Devotees approach the temple with humility, purity, and respect, offering prayers for courage, clarity, education, protection, family welfare, and spiritual progress.
The sacred tradition of Nallur Kandaswamy is very old and is linked with the historic city of Nallur, once associated with the Jaffna kingdom. Earlier shrines of Kandaswamy are traditionally traced back many centuries, while the present temple was rebuilt in 1734 CE during the Dutch colonial period by Ragunatha Maapaana Mudaliyar.
Over later generations, temple custodians expanded and renovated the complex. New gopurams, bell towers, enclosing walls, mandapas, and ritual spaces were added, gradually shaping Nallur into one of the most impressive Hindu temple complexes in Sri Lanka.
Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil follows Tamil temple architectural traditions with tall gopurams, fortified walls, spacious courtyards, shrines, and processional routes. The temple's golden and richly coloured towers are among the most recognisable landmarks of Jaffna.
The Nallur Annual Festival is the temple's most celebrated event. It begins with the hoisting of the sacred flag, known as Kodiyetram, and continues for about twenty-five days with abhishekams, special pujas, processions, music, vows, and offerings.
During the festival season, Nallur becomes a centre of intense devotion. Many devotees observe vows, walk barefoot, wear simple traditional clothing, and participate in processions with deep discipline.
Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil holds great importance in the religious life of Jaffna and the Sri Lankan Tamil community. It has inspired temples in the Tamil diaspora and continues to serve as a centre of worship, memory, and cultural belonging.
The temple's strict ritual order, clean courtyards, devotional music, and festival processions reflect the depth of Saiva temple culture in northern Sri Lanka. For many families, a visit to Nallur is an essential act of devotion when they come to Jaffna.
The temple is located in Nallur, Jaffna District, Northern Province, Sri Lanka.
