Introduction

Shri Chamundeshwari Temple is the famous hilltop shrine of Goddess Chamundeshwari on Chamundi Hills, about 13 km from Mysuru in Karnataka. The goddess is worshipped as a fierce and protective form of Shakti, and is revered as the Nada Devi, the state goddess of Karnataka.

The temple overlooks Mysuru city from the summit of Chamundi Hills. Its towering gopuram, sacred legends, royal connection with the Wodeyars of Mysore, and central role in Mysuru Dasara make it one of the most important Devi temples in South India.

Goddess Chamundeshwari

Chamundeshwari is worshipped as Mahishasura Mardini, the goddess who destroyed the buffalo demon Mahishasura. According to local tradition, Mahishasura ruled this region and was defeated by the goddess on Chamundi Hill. The name Mysuru is traditionally connected with the old name Mahishuru, the land of Mahishasura.

Devotees worship Chamundeshwari for courage, protection, victory over negativity, family welfare, and spiritual strength. Her presence is both fierce and motherly, combining the power of Durga with the grace of the divine mother.

History and Royal Patronage

The sacredness of Chamundi Hill is ancient, and the temple grew in importance under the rulers of Mysuru. The Wodeyars of Mysore especially revered Chamundeshwari as their family and state deity. The present temple structure reflects additions and renovations from different periods. Its prominent gopuram and expanded temple layout are closely associated with later royal patronage, while the hill itself remains a sacred landmark of Mysuru.

The temple is built in Dravidian style, with a striking multi-tiered gopuram, sanctum, mandapas, and sacred enclosures. The deity inside the sanctum is richly adorned during worship and festivals.
